    Men's Basketball Coach
Larry G. Hargett was the third coach of the men's basketball program and the first full-time coach hired by the university in an effort to enhance the intercollegiate athletic program. Upon taking the position, Coach Hargett stated that his goal would be a high-quality team that represents the University "in the best possible manner".

He took over the program in 1978. Prior to that time, the program had only recorded double-digit wins twice in its 11 seasons and amassed only 72 wins during that time. Within two seasons, Hargett had turned the Spartans around and led the team to their first-ever NCAA Tournament bid.

UNCG got to its first NCAA postseason in men's basketball by defeating neighboring Greensboro College in the opening game of the 1980 Dixie
Conference Tournament followed by back-to-back one-point thrillers· over North Carolina Wesleyan and Christopher Newport to claim the title.

Coach Hargett also coached the women's tennis program from 1978 through 1982. During that time, the Spartans won the NCAIAW championship in 1980. The following season, the team won the Dixie Conference regular-season and tournament titles leading Hargett to be named the Dixie Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.
