Coach Nancy Porter's 1973 UNCG women's golf team won the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women's (AIAW) national championship title by one stroke over Rollins College at The Orchards in South Hadley, Mass. This was the first team to win a national championship title for the University. Candace Robertson and Donna Horton White spearheaded the team's efforts. Beth Caywood and Patricia Walters were the other team members participating in the championship for UNCG.

UNCG's top finisher, Candace Robertson stated "I had no idea coming up the 18th fairway that I needed a par putt for our team to win the national championship. What a wonderful way to cap off one's college career winning the first national championship ever for your University."

During this era, women’s athletics was almost non-existent. There were no large budgets, elaborate uniforms, or technologically advanced clubs. Athletics participation was considered to be something to pass the time, stay active and maintain a healthy body.

Team Members: Beth Caywood, Candace Robertson, Patricia Walters, Donna Horton-White, and Elizabeth Phillips Winstead.

*All stats were as of the date of induction.
