ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
During Dean Ethel Martus Lawther’s four decades at the institution now known as UNCG, she clearly paved the way for today’s athletic programs. At a time when athletics at the institution was struggling to identify itself, Dean Lawther, with courage to move ahead in uncharted and turbulent waters, showed far-sightedness, vision, and willingness to take risks, especially for women athletes. These qualities allowed her to develop both women's and men’s athletics in an extremely challenging climate.
Dean Lawther also gave approval for two national championships to be conducted at the Woman’s College, the Women’s National Collegiate Golf Tournament in 1953 and USLTA Women’s Collegiate Tournament in 1964 and 1965 (the first national tennis tournament held on a college campus).
