ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
During Dr. William E. Moran’s 15 years as chancellor at the University, 1979-94, he strengthened the athletic program at the NCAA Division III level, increased the athletic budget and reducing the number of teams to eight. As a result, UNCG enjoyed notable success, including winning national championships in men’s soccer (1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987) and finishing second (1982) and third (1988) nationally in women’s basketball and second (1983) in women’s tennis. Dr. Moran guided the University through an unprecedented shift in competitive status to the Division I level in 1991. He took steps to upgrade the athletic facilities. With his support, the soccer stadium was constructed along with the HHP Building, which has facilities for the School of Health and Human Performance and Intercollegiate Athletics. Initial plans were made for the baseball stadium, which was constructed after the left office.
His leadership set the tone for a program which maintains a firm commitment to the student-athlete concept.
