ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
Hilmar Björnsson led the nation in assists as a senior and helped the men’s soccer team make a successful transition from the NCAA Division II ranks to Division I in a stellar four-year career from 1989-92. In his freshman year, the Spartans were runners-up in the Division II National Championship.
The forward/midfielder set a team record for career assists with 62 and season assists with 22 as a senior in 1992. He led the team in assists in each of his four years (tied with teammate Jason Haupt as a sophomore in 1990). He was the team’s leading scorer with 46 points as a senior and ranks 10th all-time in scoring.
Björnsson was named to the All-Region first team in 1990, second team in 1989 and 1992, and third team in 1991. He earned Big South first team honors in 1992, as well as being selected for the Big South All-Tournament Team.
He played professionally with KR Reykjavik (1993-98, 2003-04), Helsingborg (1998-99), Fram Reykjavik (1999-01), Hafnarfjordur (2001-03) and he also played for the Icelandic National Team (1994-97) and he had three caps.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in media studies in May 1993.
