The 1985 men’s soccer team became the third UNCG soccer team to claim the NCAA Division II National Championship as the Spartans posted a 20-5-0 overall record and a 7-0-0- mark in the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  UNCG won its final eight games of the season, including a dominating performance in the NCAA Tournament as the Spartans posted four shutouts in five games, outscoring opponents by a 17-1 margin.

Under the direction of National Coach of the Year Michael Parker, the Spartans notched the National Title with an impressive 5-0 victory over Washington (Mo.) in St. Louis as Andrew Mehalko scored three goals to lead the Spartans to victory.  UNCG was led by first-team All-America recipient Brian Japp and third-team All-America selection Steve Harrison during the year.
