ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
From 2003-06, Randi Patterson ’10 was one of the most prolific goal scorers in the nation while helping elevate UNCG men’s soccer to new heights. In 88 career appearances as a forward, he recorded 61 goals, 19 assists and 141 points, numbers that rank among the best in program history. His career marks in goals and points rank second all-time at UNCG, while his 16 game-winning goals remain a team record.
Patterson wasted little time making his presence felt. As a freshman in 2003, he led the Southern Conference with 11 goals and tied for the league scoring lead with 24 points, earning Second-Team All-SoCon honors.
The following season, Patterson took his game to another level. He scored 19 goals and added eight assists for 46 points, earning SoCon Player of the Year honors and helping
the Spartans climb as high as No. 2 in the national rankings. His 19 goals remain one of the highest single-season totals in program history.
In 2005, Patterson once again dominated opposing defenses, recording 18 goals and eight assists for 44 points. For his career, he accumulated 141 points (fifth in team history), 61 goals (also fifth) and a Division I era-leading 16 game-winning goals and 163 shots on goal.
He became the first player in 20 years to win the SoCon Player of the Year award twice and earned Second-Team All-America honors from both the NSCAA and College Soccer News. He was also named one of 15 semifinalists for the prestigious Hermann Trophy. He was later inducted into the program’s Soccer Wall of Honor.
That success followed Patterson beyond Greensboro. His professional career included stops with the New York Red Bulls, Chicago Storm, Charleston Battery, Crystal Palace Baltimore and Austin Aztex, while also representing Trinidad and Tobago internationally, to which his family has ties. In 2009, he scored twice in Charleston’s 3-1 victory over MLS club Chivas USA, helping the Battery advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup.
