ln three years as a student-athlete at UNCG, 1980-83, Mike Sweeney played a significant role in the success of the men's soccer team. He played on the first two NCAA Division III championship teams in 1982 and 1983. His accomplishments are outstanding especially when considering he only competed for the Spartans three years. He is ranked 6th all-time in scoring in men's soccer history. Mike was touted as one of the best overall athletes to wear a Spartan soccer uniform. Standing 6'2", Mike was blessed with a 38-inch vertical leap that made him a deadly goal-scoring threat not only on the ground but also in the air.

In 1982, Mike scored the game-winning goals in the quarterfinals, semi-finals, and finals for UNCG's first national championship men's soccer team and helped establish the record for most wins in a season, 23-1-1 in 1983.

Mike turned down an invitation to represent the United States on the Olympic team participating in a tournament in Malaysia because of his commitment to the soccer team.
