In four years as a student-athlete at UNCG, 1987-90, Jason Haupt ranked among the nation's leading scorers in men's soccer and helped UNCG make a national impact in NCAA Division III and II competition. A two-time First Team All­ American, he set a new standard for goal-scoring in the men's team's history. He helped the squad to a Division III national title and a Division II national runner-up finish. The team was 63-24-2 in Haupt's career. 

As a freshman, Haupt was the team's leading scorer (14 goals, six assists) and helped the team win its third consecutive Division III national title. As a junior, Haupt led the nation (all divisions) in scoring with a team-record 29 goals and eight assists. Haupt went on to play professionally for eight seasons and helped the Greensboro Dynamo of the United States Interregional Soccer League win national titles in 1993 & 1994.
