She participated and excelled in three demanding physical sports for the University. Ellie is believed to be the youngest girl to ever win the Georgia State Open Title at age 16 in 1967.

She started for UNCG on the field hockey and basketball team and ranked No. 1 in singles on the tennis team. In Field Hockey, she was the most valuable offensive player her senior year and leading scorer her junior year.

In basketball, she participated in the nationals her sophomore year when only a few of the top basketball teams in the United States were selected to participate.
